३० जनवरी १९६२, कशाशा गांव, तंजानिया,जहां की ये घटना है।ये घटना हुई एक गर्ल्स स्कूल में,दो लड़कियां आपस में बात कर रही थी फिर अचानक हंसने लगीं, फिर दो और लड़कियां हंसने लगीं कुछ ही समय में १०० से अधिक लड़कियां पूरे स्कूल में  बेकाबू हो कर हंसने लगीं।

ये बीमारी लड़कियों के साथ गांव भी पहुंच गई,और कई लोग इससे ग्रसित हो गए। ये बीमारी एक दिन या एक महीने नहीं,बल्कि डेढ़ साल तक रही।जाहिर है कि कोई इतने लंबे समय तक लगातार हंस नहीं सकता,लोगों को दौरे पड़ने लगे, और जब भी दौरे पड़ते तो लोग बेतहाशा हंसने लगते अनियंत्रित हो जाते, दौरों का असर इतना बुरा था कि लोग खुद को नोचने लगते और सांस तक नहीं के पाते, और इस तरह शुरू हुआ द लाफिंग प्लेग।

इस संक्रमण के डेढ़ साल तक चलने के कारण स्कूलों को कई बार खोला और बंद किया गया,शिक्षकों को पढ़ाने में काफी मुश्किलें हो रही थीं,एकाएक कोई भी बच्चा हंसने लग जाता था। ऐसी ही एक घटना सन् १९६२ जुलाई में अमेरिका  हुई और थाईलैंड के एक स्कूल में भी हुई।कई सारे ऐसे भी वाक़िए हुए हैं जिसमें लोग हंसते हंसते मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो गए,एक तो भारत में भी हुआ था अभी कुछ ही साल पहले। महाराष्ट्र के वसई में एक आदमी ग्रैंड मस्ती देखते हुए  सिनेमा हाल में ही मर गया।

ऐसी अनेक छोटी बड़ी घटनाओं के बाद भी कोई इनके कारण का सही सही पता नहीं लगा पाया है। कुछ विद्वान इसे साइकॉजैनिक इलनेस का नाम देते हैं,जिसकी वजह से लोग अपना आत्म नियंत्रण खो कर बस हंसने लग जाते थे,और ये एक सामूहिक उन्माद के रूप में विकसित हो गया। अंततः इन  सभी घटनाओं के बाद भी मूल स्रोत या कारण का पता किसी को भी नहीं है।

The Laughing Plague

Could laughter be a contagious outbreak? Well, you might wonder how? Here is a story that will quench your curiosity.

January 30,1962, Kashasha Village, Tanzania, it happened in an all-girls school where everything was going normal and suddenly two girls started laughing over something, then they were joined by two more girls, and then the number kept increasing. Soon more than a hundred girls were laughing and giggling uncontrollably.

The Contagion reached the Village when the girls went back to their homes, soon the whole village was laughing. This did not stay for a few hours or days, it stayed almost for a year and a half. Obviously, nobody was laughing continuously for that long, people started getting "fits", meaning they would start laughing suddenly and uncontrollably for some time then get normal the extent of fits were so high that people would scratch themselves hard, have difficulty in breathing, etc. And This resulted in the Laughing Plague.

As this continued for a year and a half all the schools were opened and shut down many times. Teachers mostly found it difficult to teach the class where some would abruptly break into laughter, similar incidents have happened in a factory in USA 1962  and in a School in Thailand. There are cases in which people have died of Laughing. One happened in India, a few years back in Vasai Maharashtra a Man died in the theatre watching Grand Masti.

No one can exactly tell how or why it began, as the girls in the school were not exposed to laughing gas or anything that would chemically or biologically cause it. Some experts say it was some kind of Psychogenic Illness, which caused this mass hysteria. People were not doing it unwillingly or subconsciously, they would just break into it. Till now even after various other such incidents around the globe, the real cause is still unknown.
