नृत्य प्लेग

जुलाई सन्१५१८,शहर स्ट्रस्बोर्ग में (अब फ्रांस में) जो रोमन साम्राज्य का एक स्वतंत्र शहर था,एक महिला सड़क पर आकर बिना संगीत के अकेले करना नृत्य शुरु करती है, और वह तब तक नृत्य करती है जब तक वह थक कर गिर नहीं जाती,कुछ क्षण आराम करने के बाद वह पुनः नृत्य आरंभ कर देती है।कुछ दिन वह अकेले बिना रुके नृत्य करती रही किन्तु एक सप्ताह के भीतर उसके साथ ३० लोग और जुड़ गए। लोगों को यह नहीं पता कि ये क्यों और कैसे हुआ, बस उन्हें एक आवेग आया और वे  बस उस नृत्य में जुड़ते गए। धीरे धीरे लोगों की संख्या बढ़ती गई,और इसके साथ साथ अधिकारियों और पादरियों की चिंताएं भी।किसी को नहीं पता था कि इस नृत्य प्लेग की वजह क्या थी,कुछ इसे एक प्रकार का मनोविकार कहते थे कुछ भूत प्रेत के साए को वजह बताते थे,कुछ विद्वानों ने इसे साइकॉजेनिक डिसऑर्डर का नाम दिया। किन्तु कोई भी इसके असल कारणों का पता नहीं लगा पाया। अधिकारियों ने सलाह मशवरा करके कुछ संगीतकारों को बुलाया और लोगों को संगीत पर नृत्य करवाया यह सोच कर कि जब संगीत बंद होगा तो स्थिति नियंत्रण में आ जाएगी।किन्तु परिणाम इसके विपरित हुए,इस व्यवस्था के कारण ये सामूहिक उन्माद में परिवर्तित हो गया और नृत्य करने वालों की संख्या ४०० तक पहुंच गई। लोग अपने घावों कि परवाह किए बिना, बगैर कुछ खाए पिए, लगातार नृत्य करते रहे और अत्यधिक थकान एवं घावों के परिणामवश कुछ लोगों की रोज़ मृत्यु होती रही, पर अन्य सभी नृत्य करते रहे।

दो महीने बाद सितंबर में यह प्लेग उतने ही रहस्यमय तरीके से गायब हो गया जितने रहस्यमय तरीके से उपजा था। वहां की एक स्थानीय मान्यता थी कि जो सेंट विटस, जो की नृत्य और मानसिक रोगों के देवता हैं (खास तौर पे मिर्गी) उन्हें प्रसन्न ना कर पाने पर ये नृत्य करने का श्राप लगता है।

The Dancing plague

The dancing plague was a dance epidemic that erupted in the July of 1518, in the city of Strasbourg (then in the Roman Empire, now in France), when a lady walked into the streets and started dancing uncontrollably, her name was Mrs. Frau Trauffea. She started dancing alone without music and danced till she fainted, after some rest, she began again. She continued to dance alone for few days but within a week she was joined by 30 other people. This sudden uncontrollable urge to dance increased significantly among the people and grabbed the attention of local Bishop and authorities.No one knows how it all began or why it began people speculate from demonic possessions to mass hysteria, psychogenic disorders to overheated blood, but the true cause was never known.

Authorities tried to mend it in different ways like arranging for musicians to accompany the dancers, so that when the music stops people will stop too, but that didn't work. Instead, it boosted the dancing plague as it reached 400 people.

People danced continuously without noticing their injuries and exhaustion and people died every day cause of this enormous physical exertion, but others kept joining and kept dancing.

The plague died down in September of the same year, after two horrifying months as mysteriously as it appeared. There was a local belief that those who failed to appease St.Vitus, Paterson saint of epileptics and dancing, would be cursed by being forced to dance.
