Sion, Mumbai(before British known as Shiv) 1985-88, gruesome killing of pavement dwellers, by crushing their heads under a massive stone begin to terrorize the city. It continued for about three years and then stopped, only to begin somewhere else.
In June1989, the same kind of murders begin in Kolkata and continued for about 6 months killing 13 people. This time he also got the attention of international media, Los Angeles Times wrote "All his victims were beggars, homeless people, rickshaw pullers and lunatics who share their muddy concrete bed with rats, garbage and diseases. As no one came to collect the bodies of the dead, these people were officially non-existent.

The Kolkata Police came under tremendous pressure when rumors of ritual sacrifices begin to spread, and the social panic was in the air. In 1989, a man came forward claiming to be a survivor, but he couldn't see the face of his attacker, later found out to be lying. The Police arrested several people under suspicion but later released them on lack of evidence.

The Identity of the 'StoneMan' was never known, he was never caught, there are only speculations about his identity, that It was a man, well built, and strong physique because lifting up and dropping a 30kg stone block and after that getting lost in the wind requires some great physical abilities. This Stoneman is listed among the world's top mysterious serial killers like Jack The Ripper, as he was also never caught.

Not quite long back, in 2003 Kolhapur, Maharashtra similar killing was reported and in 2016 in West Bengal, a young man's head was squashed, people feared the return of the Stoneman.

"द स्टोनमैन"

सायन, मुंबई (जो ब्रिटिश राज के पहले शिव के नाम से जाना जाता था) सन् १९८५ से १९८८ तक, एक दहशत में रहा,ये दहशत थी एक हत्यारे की,जो फुटपाथ पर सोने वाले लोगों की पत्थर से सिर कुचल कर हत्या कर दिया करता था। यह क्रम ३ वर्षों तक चला,और फिर बंद हो गया सिर्फ किसी अन्य जगह शुरू होने के लिए।
जून सन् १९८९ कोलकाता में इसी तरह की घटनाओं की पुनरावृत्ति हुई,और ६ महीने तक चली जिसमें कुल १३ हत्याएं दर्ज हुई। कोलकाता प्रशासन पर दबाव तब बढ़ा जब  टोटके जादू और बलि की अफवाहों ने समाज में मजबूत जगह बना ली। इसके साथ ही इस बार इसे अंतरराष्ट्रीय मीडिया का भी ध्यान मिला। लॉस एंजिलिस टाइम्स ने लिखा " इस हत्यारे के सभी पीड़ित गरीब, बेघर,और वे रिक्शा चालक थे जो सड़क के किनारे पर,कचरे और बीमारियों के साथ ही सोया करते थे।"
एक व्यक्ति ने इस हत्यारे से बच निकलने का दावा करते हुए पुलिस के पास पहुंचा, उसके अनुसार उसने हमलावर का चेहरा नहीं देखा, किन्तु उसकी कही बातों में बहुत असामनता पाई गई। कुछ लोगों को संदेह की बिनाह पर गिरफ्तार भी किया गया, किन्तु  साक्ष्य के आभाव में रिहा कर दिया गया।
द स्टोनमैन का विषय में कुछ तथ्य हैं जैसे कि वह एक बलिष्ठ शरीर का आदमी हो सकता है,क्योंकि ३०किलो के पत्थर को उठा कर किसी के सिर पर पटकने तथा उसके बाद तुरंत गायब हो जाने के लिए अच्छी शारीरिक क्षमताओं की आवश्यकता होगी।
द स्टनेमैन की पहचान कभी नहीं हो पाई,और उसके द्वारा की हत्याओं ने उसे विश्व के कुछ नामी सीरियल किलर जैसे कि जैक द रिपर, की सूची में शामिल कर दिया।
वैसे सन् २००३ में कोल्हापुर, और २०१६ में पश्चिम बंगाल में इन घटनाओं की पुनरावृत्ति हुई, तो लोगों को आशंका हुई की शायद वह वापस आ गया है।
